You signed up for a free trial, an OTT plan or a monthly SIP, and now money leaves your account every month without you touching your phone. That is UPI AutoPay doing exactly what it was set up to do. The good news is that stopping it in PhonePe takes about two minutes.
This tutorial shows you how to find every AutoPay on your PhonePe account, decide whether to pause or cancel, and make sure the next debit does not go through.
| Choose | When it fits | What happens |
| Pause | You want a break (travel, tight month) but will continue later | No debits during the pause; the mandate stays active |
| Cancel / Delete | You no longer want the service or subscription | The mandate ends permanently; you must set it up again to restart |
If you are unsure, cancel. Setting up a new AutoPay later takes less than a minute.
App menus change from time to time. If you cannot see these exact labels, search for "AutoPay" in the app's help section.
When you tap Pause, PhonePe asks for a start and end date. No debits happen between those dates, and AutoPay resumes automatically after the end date.
Enter your UPI PIN to authorise the pause. Without the PIN, the pause request is not sent to your bank and the next debit can still go through.
Open the AutoPay again to confirm it shows as paused with your chosen dates. If it still shows active, repeat the steps or contact PhonePe support.
Under RBI rules for recurring payments, you receive a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each AutoPay debit. That notification is your last good window to act.
| Problem | Likely reason | Fix |
| AutoPay not visible in PhonePe | It was set up through another UPI app, a card or net banking | Check Google Pay, Paytm, your bank app or card standing instructions |
| "Cannot cancel" error | Merchant restriction or temporary server issue | Try again later, then contact PhonePe support with the mandate details |
| Money still deducted after cancelling | Cancellation happened after the debit was triggered | Ask the merchant for a refund, then raise a complaint in PhonePe |
| Subscription still active after cancelling AutoPay | Cancelling AutoPay stops payment, not the service account | Also cancel the subscription inside the service's own app or website |
| Unknown AutoPay you never set up | Possible misuse or forgotten trial | Cancel immediately and report it to PhonePe and your bank |
This is the step most people miss. Stopping AutoPay in PhonePe stops the payment instruction. It does not always close your account with the service provider. If the provider believes your plan is still active, it may keep sending payment requests or show unpaid dues.
For a clean exit:
Neha, a working professional in Gurugram, set up a ₹199 monthly AutoPay for a music app during a trial and forgot about it. Eight months later, she noticed ₹1,592 had been debited. She cancelled the AutoPay in PhonePe in under two minutes, then cancelled the subscription in the music app. The past debits were for a service she technically had access to, so the refund was at the provider's discretion. Her lesson: check the AutoPay list every few months.
Open the AutoPay list once a month. It takes thirty seconds and helps you catch forgotten trials, old subscriptions or anything you do not recognise.
PhonePe and your bank will never ask for your UPI PIN to cancel an AutoPay. Anyone asking for it over a call or message is likely a fraudster.
Do not ignore pre-debit notifications. They tell you the amount, merchant and date in advance, giving you time to cancel anything you no longer want.
Need to stop an AutoPay on Netflix, an HDFC card, Google Pay or directly from your bank account? Our guide on how to stop autopay on any app or bank covers every platform.
1. How do I stop autopay in PhonePe? Tap your profile picture, go to Payment Management, tap AutoPay, select the mandate, choose Pause or Cancel, and confirm with your UPI PIN.
2. Can I pause autopay in PhonePe instead of cancelling it? Yes. Choose Pause, select start and end dates, and confirm with your UPI PIN. AutoPay resumes after the end date.
3. Why can't I see my autopay in PhonePe? It was probably set up through another UPI app, a debit or credit card, or net banking. Check those apps or your bank's standing-instruction section.
4. Will cancelling autopay refund money already deducted? No. Cancelling stops future debits only. For past debits, request a refund from the merchant or raise a complaint if the debit was unauthorised.
5. Does cancelling autopay cancel my subscription? Not always. Cancel the subscription inside the service's own app too, so it does not keep sending payment requests.
6. Is there a charge to cancel autopay in PhonePe? PhonePe does not charge for pausing or cancelling AutoPay.
7. How much can AutoPay debit without my PIN? Under RBI rules, recurring payments up to ₹15,000 can be debited without fresh authentication each time. For mutual funds, insurance premiums and credit card bills, this limit is ₹1 lakh.
Stopping autopay in PhonePe is quick: profile, Payment Management, AutoPay, select, pause or cancel, and confirm with your PIN. Do it before the pre-debit notice where possible, and remember to cancel the subscription itself too.
A monthly thirty-second check of your AutoPay list is the easiest way to stop paying for things you no longer use.
