Here is the single most useful thing to know about stopping autopay: you must cancel it in the same place it was set up. An autopay created through Google Pay will not appear in PhonePe. A standing instruction on your HDFC credit card will not appear in any UPI app. That is why so many people "cancel" autopay and still get charged.
This guide is organised as a directory. First, figure out where your autopay lives. Then jump to that platform and follow the steps.
Look at the debit entry in your bank statement or SMS. The description usually tells you the route.
| What the debit or SMS shows | Where the autopay lives | Jump to |
| "UPI" or "UPI Mandate" with a merchant name | A UPI app (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, bank UPI app) | UPI apps section |
| Charged to your credit or debit card | Card standing instruction | Cards section |
| "NACH," "ECS" or "ACH" | Bank account mandate (common for EMIs, SIPs, insurance) | Bank account section |
| Charged by Google Play or App Store | App store subscription | App store section |
Tap your profile picture, open Payment Management, then AutoPay. Select the mandate, choose Pause or Cancel and confirm with your UPI PIN. See our full PhonePe autopay guide.
Tap your profile picture, open Autopay, and select the active mandate. Choose Cancel (or Pause, where offered) and confirm with your UPI PIN to stop future debits.
Open Paytm, search for Automatic Payments or UPI AutoPay, select the mandate, and choose Cancel or Pause. Confirm with your UPI PIN and keep the confirmation screen.
Bank apps like BHIM SBI Pay, iMobile and HDFC's app also list UPI mandates under UPI settings. Select the mandate, cancel it and authenticate with your UPI PIN.
Netflix is the most common autopay people want to stop. It takes two steps to be fully safe.
Step A: Cancel the Netflix membership
Step B: Remove the payment mandate
Tip: If you only want to change plans, Netflix lets you switch plans from the Account page without cancelling. If you cancel by mistake, you can restart the membership from the same page.
HDFC customers usually have autopay in one of three places.
Card standing instructions are managed through HDFC Bank's standing-instruction management portal, linked from the HDFC website and MyCards. Log in with your card details, find the merchant and cancel it.
Debit card standing instructions work the same way. You can also call HDFC PhoneBanking and ask them to remove a specific standing instruction on your card.
For NACH or e-mandates on your HDFC account (EMIs, SIPs, insurance), go to NetBanking, open the mandate or e-mandate section, and request cancellation, or visit the branch.
If the autopay was set up through UPI using your HDFC account, cancel it in the UPI app you used. The bank account is only the source of funds here.
Always tell the merchant too, especially for loan EMIs. Stopping a loan EMI mandate without arranging another payment method can lead to missed payments, penalties and a lower credit score.
Mutual fund SIPs, insurance premiums and loan EMIs are often set up as NACH mandates directly on your bank account.
Open the Play Store, tap your profile, go to Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Select the app and tap Cancel subscription. Uninstalling the app alone does not cancel it.
Open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. Access usually continues until the end of the current billing period.
The RBI's rules on recurring payments protect you in three useful ways:
| Your right | What it means |
| Pre-debit notification | You must be notified at least 24 hours before each recurring debit, with amount and merchant details |
| Easy opt-out | You can cancel a mandate at any time through the app, card portal or bank used to set it up |
| Limit without re-authentication | Recurring debits above ₹15,000 need fresh authentication; for mutual funds, insurance premiums and credit card bills, the limit is ₹1 lakh |
If a merchant keeps debiting after you cancel, raise a complaint with your bank first. If the bank does not resolve it within 30 days, you can escalate it to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
Arjun, a small business owner in Jaipur, noticed four monthly debits he could not explain: an old Netflix plan, a design-software trial, a cancelled insurance policy and a gym membership. The bank statement showed two as UPI mandates, one as a card charge and one as NACH. He cancelled the UPI mandates in Google Pay, removed the card charge through his bank's standing-instruction portal, and got the insurer to cancel the NACH mandate in writing. Total time: about 40 minutes. Monthly saving: over ₹3,500.
1. How do I stop autopay? Find where it was set up (UPI app, card, bank account or app store) from your bank statement, then cancel it in that same place.
2. How do I stop autopay in Netflix? Go to Account in Netflix and select Cancel Membership. Then cancel the payment mandate in the UPI app, card portal or app store you used to pay.
3. How do I stop Netflix autopay on UPI? Open the UPI app you used to subscribe, go to its AutoPay section, select Netflix and cancel with your UPI PIN.
4. How do I disable autopay on an HDFC credit card? Use HDFC Bank's standing-instruction management portal, linked from the HDFC website and MyCards, or call HDFC PhoneBanking and ask them to remove the standing instruction.
5. How do I stop automatic deduction from my bank account? Ask the merchant to cancel the mandate, then cancel it through net banking or by submitting a signed request at your branch. Keep the acknowledgement.
6. Will stopping autopay cancel my subscription? Not necessarily. Cancel the subscription with the service provider too, or it may keep sending payment requests or show unpaid dues.
7. Can I get a refund after autopay deducts money? Cancelling stops future debits only. For past debits, request a refund from the merchant. If the debit was unauthorised, report it to your bank immediately.
8. Is it safe to stop a loan EMI autopay? Only if you arrange another way to pay. Missed EMIs lead to penalties and can lower your credit score.
Stopping autopay is easy once you know where it lives. Check your statement, identify the route (UPI, card, NACH or app store), cancel it there, and cancel the subscription with the service provider too.
A quick monthly scan of your bank statement is the best defence against forgotten subscriptions and surprise debits.
