West Bengal Professional Tax Payment: How Ranjan Babu Sorted His P Tax

Ranjan Babu is a composite character based on the questions Kolkata business owners bring to us. The process below is real.

Ranjan Babu runs a busy sweet shop in Shyambazar, which his father started forty years ago. Six employees, two counters, and a queue every Sunday morning for his nolen gur sandesh.

One afternoon his nephew Arnab, who had just started helping with the accounts, looked up from the laptop.

"Mama, are we paying P Tax?"

Ranjan Babu frowned. "We pay GST. We pay income tax. What is this P Tax?"

That is where most West Bengal MSMEs start. So let's walk through what Arnab found out.

Chapter 1: What exactly is P Tax?

Professional tax (P Tax) is a state tax that West Bengal charges on professions, trades, callings and employment. The state law is the West Bengal State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1979, and the Directorate of Commercial Taxes runs it through the WB Professional Tax portal (wbprofessiontax.gov.in).

Two things clicked for Arnab:

  1. As an employer, Ranjan Babu must deduct P Tax from his employees' salaries and deposit it with the state.
  2. As a business owner, he must pay P Tax for himself / his business every year.

And whatever the slab, the Constitution caps P Tax at ₹2,500 per person per year.

Chapter 2: How much should be deducted?

Arnab pulled up the salary sheet. Here are the monthly slabs West Bengal applies to salaried employees:

Monthly salaryP Tax per month
Up to ₹10,000Nil
₹10,001 – ₹15,000₹110
₹15,001 – ₹25,000₹130
₹25,001 – ₹40,000₹150
Above ₹40,000₹200

Always confirm the current schedule on the WB Professional Tax portal, because slabs can be revised.

Two of Ranjan Babu's counter staff earned ₹14,000 (₹110 each) and his head karigar earned ₹22,000 (₹130). The helpers below ₹10,000 owed nothing.

"So it's a few hundred rupees a month," Ranjan Babu said. "Why bother?"

Arnab showed him the next part.

Chapter 3: Why ignoring it costs more

Not registering, not deducting or paying late in West Bengal brings interest and penalties, and they keep running every month. A small yearly amount can become a messy demand covering several years, usually at the worst moment: a bank loan application, a tender, or a GST scrutiny where an officer asks for all your state registrations.

Ranjan Babu was planning to apply for a working-capital loan to open a second outlet. He didn't want loose ends.

"Theek ache," he said. "Let's do it properly."

Chapter 4: Registering on the WB P Tax portal

Here's the route Arnab took:

  1. Opened the WB Professional Tax portal (wbprofessiontax.gov.in).
  2. Chose Enrolment (EC), for the business's own tax, and Registration (RC), as an employer deducting from salaries.
  3. Filled in:
    • Business name, PAN, constitution (proprietorship in his case)
    • Shop address and date of commencement
    • Number of employees and their salary ranges
  4. Uploaded the PAN, address proof (trade licence and electricity bill), and the proprietor's ID.
  5. Submitted and received the enrolment and registration numbers along with login access.

Tip: Arnab registered with a family-owned email and mobile number, not his personal number. If he ever leaves, the shop doesn't lose access.

Chapter 5: Paying P Tax online through GRIPS

Payments in West Bengal go through GRIPS, the state's online receipt portal.

  • Log in to the P Tax portal with the RC/EC number.
  • Choose Payment, select the period and the type (employer deduction or own enrolment tax).
  • You're redirected to GRIPS. Pay by net banking or another available mode.
  • Download and save the challan / GRN. This is your only proof if the payment doesn't show up later.

Employers deduct P Tax from salaries every month and deposit it by the monthly due date set by the Directorate. The business's own enrolment tax is paid annually. Arnab put both on his calendar with a reminder three days before each due date.

Chapter 6: Returns, the step people forget

Paying isn't the end. Employers holding a Registration Certificate must also file P Tax returns on the portal for the periods prescribed. Arnab learned:

  • File even when deductions are nil (for example, a month with no staff in taxable slabs).
  • Match the return to the challans exactly. A mismatch leads to notices.
  • Keep a simple register: employee name, salary, slab, P Tax deducted, challan number.

Chapter 7: What changed for Ranjan Babu

Three months later, the bank's loan officer asked for "all statutory registrations". Ranjan Babu handed over a neat folder: GST, trade licence, Udyam, P Tax EC and RC, challans and returns.

The loan was approved. The second outlet opened in Salt Lake before Durga Puja.

"Arnab," he said, passing over a box of sandesh, "next time tell me about these things before someone asks."

Your P Tax checklist (if you're a West Bengal MSME)

  • Enrolment Certificate (EC) for the business
  • Registration Certificate (RC) if any employee is in a taxable slab
  • Monthly deductions mapped in payroll
  • Payments via GRIPS, GRN saved every time
  • Returns filed, including nil returns
  • Portal login on a business-owned email and mobile number
