Professional tax is a small amount of money, which is exactly why MSMEs tend to forget about it until a notice arrives. This guide answers the questions Andhra Pradesh business owners ask us most, in plain words.
Professional tax is a state tax on professions, trades, callings and employment. In Andhra Pradesh it is charged under the Andhra Pradesh Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1987 and run by the Commercial Taxes Department.
Yes. Article 276 of the Constitution caps professional tax at ₹2,500 per person per year, so no slab can go above that.
Two groups:
An MSME with staff usually needs both.
Register as soon as you start your business or hire your first employee whose salary falls in a taxable slab. Waiting until "later" is what leads to penalties.
What are the AP professional tax slabs for salaried employees?
| Monthly salary / wages | Professional tax per month |
| Up to ₹15,000 | Nil |
| ₹15,001 – ₹20,000 | ₹150 |
| Above ₹20,000 | ₹200 |
Slabs can be revised by the state, so check the current schedule on the AP Commercial Taxes portal before running payroll.
Self-employed people, firms and companies pay a fixed annual amount based on their category in the Act's schedule. For most businesses this is at or close to the ₹2,500 annual cap.
The Act exempts some categories, for example certain persons with disabilities and some senior citizens. Check the current exemption list before claiming one.
Log in to the AP professional tax portal with your PTRC/PTEC credentials, pick the period, enter the amount and pay through net banking or another available mode. Download the challan receipt every time.
Employers generally pay the tax deducted for a month by the 10th of the following month. Enrolled businesses pay their own annual tax within the time set under the Act, typically early in the financial year. Confirm current dates on the portal, because procedures get updated.
Yes. Employers holding PTRC file periodic returns showing deductions. Even a "nil" return matters, because skipping it can trigger notices.
Use "forgot password" with your registered mobile or email. If those details have changed, write to your circle office with proof of registration. Keep login details in a shared company password vault, not in one person's phone.
Expect interest on late payment and penalties for non-registration or non-payment. The amounts are small at first but they add up, and an unresolved notice can affect other registrations and bank due diligence.
Yes. Professional tax paid is allowed as a deduction from salary income for employees, and as a business expense for businesses.
Yes. GST and professional tax are completely separate. GST registration does not cover professional tax.
No. Professional tax is state-specific. Each state where you have employees or a place of business needs its own registration.
