It is 7:40 on a busy Saturday evening at a mobile accessories shop in Karol Bagh. A young customer picks up earbuds worth ₹2,800, scans the QR code, taps his phone for a few seconds and turns the screen around. A green tick, the shop's name, the right amount. "Done, bhaiya."
The owner nods, bags the earbuds, and moves to the next customer. At closing time, the day's UPI credits come up ₹2,800 short.
This is an illustrative example, but versions of it happen in shops across India every day. A PhonePe payment screenshot is useful as a receipt for the person who paid. It is not proof that money reached the person who was paid.
This guide covers both sides. First, how customers can get a genuine PhonePe payment screenshot or receipt. Then, how shopkeepers and small businesses can spot a fake one before goods leave the counter.
Part 1: For Customers. How to Get Your PhonePe Payment Screenshot or Receipt
The success screen appears immediately after payment. Take a screenshot, or tap Share to send the receipt directly on WhatsApp or another app.
Open PhonePe, tap History, select the transaction, then tap Share Receipt or take a screenshot of the details page showing amount, date and IDs.
Use the filter or search in History to find older payments by date, name or amount. This helps when an office or landlord asks for proof months later.
For official purposes, your bank statement or passbook entry is stronger proof than any app screenshot. It shows the UTR number and the bank's own record.
A complete PhonePe payment receipt usually includes:
| Detail | Why it matters |
| Amount | Confirms what was paid |
| Paid to (name and UPI ID or number) | Confirms who received it |
| Date and time | Matches the payment to an order or bill |
| Transaction ID | PhonePe's own reference for the payment |
| UTR number (12 digits) | The bank-level reference used for tracing and disputes |
| Debited from (bank account, partly masked) | Shows which account paid |
Tip: If you need to raise a complaint or ask a bank to trace a payment, always share the UTR number. It is the reference every bank in the UPI system can look up.
The golden rule first: never treat a screenshot on the customer's phone as payment. Treat your own bank account as the only source of truth.
Check your bank app, merchant app or SMS for the credit before handing over goods. If the money is not in your account, the payment has not happened, whatever the screen shows.
A payment soundbox announces every successful credit aloud. It is the simplest protection for busy counters, because staff do not need to open any app to confirm.
Fake or old screenshots often show a time that does not match "right now." Look at the timestamp and compare it with the clock on your own phone.
The receipt should show your exact business or account name and UPI ID. A slightly different name, or a personal name you do not recognise, is a red flag.
Fraudsters rush. They show the screen for a second, then pocket the phone or claim urgency. Calmly ask them to wait while you confirm the credit.
Red Flags at a Glance
| Red flag | What it might mean |
| Customer shows the screen but will not let you look closely | Screenshot may be edited or old |
| Amount is correct but no credit SMS or soundbox alert | Payment did not reach you |
| Timestamp is minutes or hours old | Old screenshot reused |
| Spelling or font looks slightly off | Edited image |
| "Payment pending, it will come in 2 hours" | Payment may have failed; do not release goods |
| Customer asks you to "send back extra" after "overpaying" | A common refund scam |
Write this on a card next to the counter. It takes ten seconds per sale and can save thousands of rupees a month.
Sometimes a genuine UPI payment shows as pending because of a bank server delay. Most pending payments resolve within minutes, and failed ones are usually reversed to the payer automatically. For the shop, the safe rule stays the same: release goods only after the credit is confirmed. If the customer is a regular, you can note their name and number and settle once the bank confirms.
Yes. Using an edited or fake payment screenshot to take goods or services is cheating, and creating false documents to deceive can amount to forgery. Both are offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and online fraud can also attract the Information Technology Act, 2000. Searching for "fake payment screenshot makers" is not harmless curiosity. These tools are used to defraud small businesses.
1. How do I download a PhonePe payment screenshot for an old payment? Open PhonePe, go to History, find the payment using the filter or search, open it and tap Share Receipt or take a screenshot of the details page.
2. Is a PhonePe payment screenshot valid proof of payment? It is a useful receipt for the payer, but it can be edited. For disputes, banks and authorities rely on the UTR number and bank statements.
3. How can I check if a PhonePe payment is real? Check your own bank app, SMS or merchant soundbox for the credit. If the money is not in your account, the payment has not been received.
4. What is the UTR number in PhonePe? The UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) is a 12-digit bank reference for the UPI payment. It is used to trace payments and raise disputes with banks.
5. What should I do if my PhonePe payment shows success but the shop did not receive it? Share the UTR number with the shop and check with your bank. If money left your account but did not reach them, raise a complaint in the PhonePe app and with your bank.
6. Can someone get my money by using my payment screenshot? A screenshot alone does not let anyone take money from your account. Still, avoid sharing screenshots publicly because they show partial account details.
7. Where can I report a fake payment screenshot fraud? Call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in, then file a police complaint with CCTV and other evidence.
For customers, a PhonePe payment screenshot is a handy receipt. Keep the UTR number for anything important. For shopkeepers, a screenshot is only a picture. The only proof that matters is a confirmed credit in your own account.
A soundbox, a ten-second counter routine and a calm refusal to rush will stop most fake-screenshot fraud.
