Changing your GST address looks like a five-minute job. It isn't hard, but it is unforgiving. One mismatched document or one wrong option and you're answering notices for weeks.
Below is the correct process, followed by the nine mistakes we see MSMEs make most often.
| Your situation | What you need |
| Moving the main office/shop to a new address in the same state | Core-field amendment: change the principal place of business |
| Adding a godown, branch or warehouse in the same state | Add an additional place of business, not an address change. See our APOB guide |
| Moving the business to a different state | New GST registration in the new state (and cancel the old one if you've fully moved). An address change won't work |
| Fixing a typo in your existing address | Core-field amendment with supporting documents |
Timeline: Apply within 15 days of the move. The officer typically decides within 15 working days or raises a query. Once approved, download the updated registration certificate.
Changing the PPOB is a core field. Editing the non-core section won't change your registered address, so you'll think it's done when it isn't. Fix: Always use Amendment of Registration Core Fields for the main address.
GST registration is PAN-based and state-based. You can't move a Maharashtra GSTIN to Gujarat. Fix: Apply for a new registration in the new state.
"Shop No. 4, Sai Plaza" on the rent agreement, "S-4 Sai Plaza" on the electricity bill and "Sai Plaza Shop 4" on the portal is one of the top reasons for rejection. Fix: Type the address exactly as it appears on the primary proof, and make sure the documents match each other.
An agreement that has expired, or is unsigned or unregistered where registration is required, is a red flag. Fix: Upload a current, signed agreement, registered where your state requires it.
If you operate from a relative's property or sublet space, the NOC must come from the legal owner, not the tenant. Fix: Get the NOC signed by the owner shown on the property tax receipt or electricity bill, and attach the owner's ID.
Fix: Upload a recent utility bill (typically within the last couple of months) as a clear, readable PDF.
Entering today's date when you actually moved two months ago, or a future date, creates inconsistencies with invoices and e-way bills. Fix: Enter the actual date you started operating from the new address, and apply within 15 days.
After approval, your invoices, e-way bills, letterheads, signboard, bank records, Udyam, Shop & Establishment licence and marketplace seller accounts still show the old address. Fix: Keep a post-approval checklist (see below).
If the officer raises a clarification and you miss the deadline, the amendment can be rejected. Fix: Check the portal and your registered email daily until approval, and reply with exactly the documents requested.
| Possession type | Upload |
| Owned | Property tax receipt / municipal khata or electricity bill in your name |
| Rented / leased | Valid rent/lease agreement + recent electricity bill |
| Consent / shared | Consent letter / NOC from the owner + owner's ID + electricity bill |
| Company / LLP | Above + board resolution / authorisation, and DSC for signing |

Is there a government fee? No.
I work from a virtual office. Can I use it as my new address? Possibly, where the documents support it. Read our guide on virtual offices for GST registration.
StartupFlora prepares your documents, files the amendment and handles officer queries, so your address change is approved without the back-and-forth. Talk to our GST team.
General information only. GST procedures follow GST law and GSTN portal updates, which change, so verify on gst.gov.in before filing.
