Forgot Your Udyam Registration Number? Start With Your Situation, Not the Steps

Every guide on this topic gives you the same six steps. Those six steps only work if you still control the mobile number used when you registered, and if you did not register it yourself, you probably do not.

So this guide is organised by situation instead. Find yours in the table, go to that section, and skip the rest.

Find Your Situation

Before anything else, one sentence that saves people money: the only official portal is udyamregistration.gov.in, and every service on it is free. Recovery, certificate printing, registration, updates. If a site asks for ₹499 or ₹1,499, close it.

First, Make Sure You Are Solving the Right Problem

People arrive at this page with three different problems and call all of them "forgot my Udyam number". They have different fixes.

Most people need the first two in sequence. Recovering the number does not give you the certificate; that is a second, separate action on the same menu. Plan to do both in one sitting, because the OTP flow has to be repeated otherwise.

Situation A: You Have the Registered Mobile

This is the two-minute case.

1. Open https://udyamregistration.gov.in by typing it, not by clicking a search result. Confirm the address ends in .gov.in.
2. Open the Print / Verify dropdown and choose Forgot Udyam/UAM No.
3. Select Udyam Registration Number (or Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum if you registered before July 2020 and never migrated).
4. Select mobile number as filled in the application as the OTP option.
5. Enter that mobile number, complete the captcha, click Validate & Generate OTP.
6. Enter the OTP. Your URN and enterprise name appear on screen.

Then, immediately, go back to Print / Verify → Print Udyam Certificate, enter the URN, validate with the same OTP method, and download the PDF.

If no OTP arrives: wait a full 60 seconds before requesting again, and check you have used the number from the original application rather than a current one. The portal matches against the application record, not against your PAN or Aadhaar. No OTP almost always means wrong number, not a broken portal.

Situation B: Mobile Dead, Email Alive

Same flow as Situation A, with one change at step 4: choose email as filled in the application instead of the mobile option.

This is the most under-used route on the portal and it rescues a large share of cases. Before you assume you are stuck, check:

• The proprietor's personal Gmail, even if unused for years
• An old business domain email, if the domain is still alive
• Whether the consultant used your email while keeping their own mobile, which is common

Email access alone is enough. You do not need the mobile at all.

Situation C: Your Consultant Holds the Contact Details

This is the single most common reason people are still stuck after trying the portal, and no competing guide treats it seriously.

The uncomfortable fact: if the consultant's mobile and email are on the registration, the portal will send the OTP to them. There is no way around that from the recovery screen. You have three options, in order of speed.

Option 1: Ask, with the right framing

Most consultants will simply forward the OTP. Ask for the OTP at a fixed time so you can enter it inside the validity window, and ask them to share the URN in writing.

Where a consultant is withholding it over an unpaid bill or a lapsed relationship, note that they are not holding an asset of theirs. The registration belongs to the enterprise. Saying so plainly, in writing, usually resolves it.

Option 2: Change the registered contact details yourself

You do not need the consultant for this. The update route runs on Aadhaar, not on the existing mobile.

Go to Update Details → Update Udyam Registration. Authenticate with the Aadhaar OTP of the proprietor, managing partner or authorised signatory, sent to the mobile linked to that Aadhaar. Once inside, change the contact mobile and email on the registration. From then on, recovery OTPs come to you.

This is the route to take if the relationship has ended. It closes the dependency permanently.

Option 3: Escalate

If Aadhaar authentication also fails, go to Situation D.

A practical note: once you have recovered the number, update the contact details anyway, even if the consultant cooperated. Otherwise you will be back here in two years.

Situation D: Both Contacts Are Gone

This is the genuine dead end, and it needs a human. Two routes, and you can run them in parallel.

Route 1: CHAMPIONS grievance portal

Raise a grievance at champions.gov.in, the Ministry of MSME's grievance and handholding system. State that the registered mobile and email on your Udyam registration are no longer accessible and that you need the contact details updated.

Include in the grievance: enterprise name exactly as registered, PAN, GSTIN, the approximate date of registration, and the Aadhaar of the authorised signatory.

Route 2: District Industries Centre or MSME-DFO

Go in person to your District Industries Centre (DIC) or the nearest MSME-Development and Facilitation Office. This is usually faster than the portal for a contact-detail problem.

Carry:

• PAN and GSTIN of the enterprise
• Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner or authorised signatory
• Any evidence the registration exists: an old certificate printout, a bank sanction letter quoting the URN, a tender document, a GST registration referencing it, or an email from the consultant
• A written request on letterhead stating the position and what you need changed

What not to do: do not register again. A second registration against the same PAN creates a duplicate that surfaces later during scheme verification, tender scrutiny or bank due diligence, and it resets the registration date you may need for vintage-linked benefits. One enterprise, one registration is how the system is designed, and the mismatch is worse than the delay.

Situation E: The Name on the Registration Does Not Match

You recovered the number, but the enterprise name on the Udyam certificate does not match your GST registration or your bank records, and the bank has rejected the file.

This is common after a constitution change: a proprietorship that became a partnership, a firm that converted to an LLP, or a trade name that changed while the legal name did not.

What to check first. Udyam pulls the legal name from PAN, not the trade name you use on invoices. A mismatch between "Sharma Traders" on your signboard and "Ramesh Kumar Sharma" on the certificate is not an error; it is the PAN name, and banks accept it once explained.

When it is a real mismatch. If the constitution genuinely changed, the correct fix is not an edit. A change in the legal entity means the old registration belongs to the old entity. Register the new entity, and be prepared to explain the transition. Take advice before doing this, because the registration date resets and any vintage-linked benefit is affected.

How to Spot a Fake Udyam Site in Five Seconds

This niche has an unusually high density of look-alike sites, because the searches are high volume and the users are non-expert. Four checks:

What the paid sites deliver is usually the same number the free portal returns, on a certificate template that banks do not accept, after which you still have to download the official PDF. The Ministry has repeatedly clarified that Udyam registration and related services carry no fee.

After You Recover It: Three Things to Do in the Same Sitting

1. Download the certificate PDF. The recovery screen shows the number only. Banks, tenders and buyers want the certificate.
2. Update the registered mobile and email to ones you control. Aadhaar-authenticated, takes five minutes, and prevents the next occurrence.
3. Check your classification. The revised MSME limits from 1 April 2025 moved many enterprises back into a smaller category. Micro is now ₹2.5 crore investment and ₹10 crore turnover, small is ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore, medium is ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. Your category determines your CGTMSE guarantee coverage percentage, so it is worth knowing.

Store the PDF in cloud storage and email it to yourself with "Udyam" in the subject so it is searchable. Most people reading this are reading it for the second time.

Why does my Udyam certificate show a different name from my GST? Udyam takes the legal name from PAN, not your trade name. A proprietorship will show the proprietor's name. This is normal and banks accept it. A genuine constitution change is a different matter and needs advice.

Does the Udyam registration number expire? No. It is permanent with no renewal. Only your micro, small or medium classification updates each year, automatically from ITR and GST data.

How do I check whether a Udyam number someone gave me is real? Use Verify Udyam Registration Number on the Print / Verify menu. It shows the enterprise name and status against the number with no OTP required. This is also how a bank or buyer verifies you.

I registered under Udyog Aadhaar, not Udyam. Does this still work? Yes. Select the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum option in the same recovery form. If you never migrated to Udyam, do that separately, since UAM is no longer accepted for most purposes.
