A domain name search tells you whether the web address you want, such as yourbrand.in or yourbrand.com, is free to register. You can check it in seconds on any accredited registrar's website or with a WHOIS lookup.
For a business, though, checking availability is only half the job. Before you buy, make sure the same name is free as a company name, isn't someone else's trademark, and is available on the social media platforms you'll use. Otherwise you may have to rebrand later.
This guide shows how to do all four checks together, how to choose between .in, .co.in and .com, and what domains really cost in India in 2026. It's for founders, small business owners and marketers naming a new business or brand.
| Particular | Details |
| What it checks | Whether a domain (e.g. yourbrand.in) is available to register |
| Where to check | Any accredited registrar's search box, or a WHOIS lookup |
| Cost to search | Free |
| India's country domain | .in (managed by NIXI's .IN Registry) |
| Typical .in price | About ₹500–₹1,000 per year (registry wholesale ₹500) |
| Typical .com price | About ₹900–₹1,500 per year |
| Registration period | 1 to 10 years, renewable |
| Also check | MCA company name, trademark search, social handles |
Prices are approximate retail ranges; first-year promotional prices are often lower than renewals.
Write down 5–10 short, easy-to-spell names. Say each one aloud; if people would misspell it after hearing it once, drop it.
Type each name into a registrar's search box to see if .in, .co.in and .com are available. Note which extensions are free and the price for each.
If a domain is taken, run a WHOIS lookup to see when it was registered, when it expires and whether it's actively used or just parked.
If you plan to register a company, check name availability on the MCA portal. Use our MCA company name check guide for steps.
Search IP India's public trademark search for identical or similar marks in your business class. A domain doesn't protect you from a trademark claim.
Confirm the name is free on Instagram, LinkedIn, X, YouTube and Facebook. Consistent handles make your brand easier to find.
| Point | .in | .co.in | .com |
| Signals | Indian business or audience | Indian commercial entity | Global business |
| Availability of good names | Better than .com | Usually good | Most short names taken |
| Typical price per year | About ₹500–₹1,000 | Usually a little lower than .in | About ₹900–₹1,500 |
| Best for | Businesses selling mainly in India | Budget option or secondary domain | Exporters, SaaS, global brands |
| Local SEO | Helps signal India targeting | Helps signal India targeting | Neutral; set country targeting via content and links |
Our recommendation: if most customers are in India, register .in as your main domain and buy the .com too (if available) to protect your brand. If you sell internationally, make .com primary and keep .in as a redirect.
| Item | Approximate cost |
| .in registration | ₹500–₹1,000 per year (often discounted in year 1) |
| .co.in registration | ₹400–₹900 per year |
| .com registration | ₹900–₹1,500 per year |
| Renewal | Usually higher than the first-year promotional price |
| Privacy protection | Free with many registrars; paid with some |
| Premium / aftermarket domains | ₹10,000 to several lakh rupees |
| Expired domain backorder | Varies by registrar or auction platform |
Tip: compare the renewal price, not just the first-year offer. A ₹99 first year can become ₹1,000+ at renewal.
Aim for 6–14 characters. Short names are easier to remember, type and fit on packaging and business cards.
Avoid words with multiple spellings, numbers and hyphens. "brandkart.in" is easier to share than "brand-kart4u.in".
A unique brand name builds long-term value. Exact-match keyword domains give little SEO advantage today.
Don't tie the name to one city or product if you plan to expand. "PuneCakes" is limiting if you later go national.
Check the name in Hindi and other regional languages your customers speak, so it doesn't carry an unwanted meaning.
A free domain can still infringe someone's trademark. That can lead to a legal notice or a domain dispute, and you may lose the domain.
If you buy only .in, someone else can buy the .com and confuse customers. Secure the main variations early.
Register the domain in the business's or founder's own account, not your developer's or agency's. Ownership disputes are common.
An expired domain can be bought by others within days. Turn on auto-renew and keep the billing card and email current.
Pick an ICANN-accredited registrar (for .com) or one accredited by the .IN Registry (for .in). Compare these points:
| What to compare | Why it matters |
| Renewal price | First-year offers often hide higher renewals |
| Free privacy protection | Hides your personal contact details from WHOIS |
| DNS management | Easy to connect your website and email |
| Transfer policy | Easy transfer if you change provider later |
| Payment in INR & GST invoice | Easier accounting for Indian businesses |
| Support | Phone or chat support in your time zone |
If the name you want is taken:
Avoid paying large amounts for a domain until you've checked the trademark position.
Turn on auto-renew and register for 2–5 years at once for your main domain to avoid accidental expiry.
Register your brand as a trademark. It strengthens your position in any domain dispute or copycat situation.
Enable the registrar lock so the domain can't be transferred without your approval.
Keep the registrar login in a company email that more than one founder can access, with two-factor authentication.
Two founders in Hyderabad want to launch "Leafly Organics". The search shows leaflyorganics.com is taken, but leaflyorganics.in is free. A WHOIS lookup shows the .com is parked and expires in 8 months.
Before buying, they check the MCA portal (a similar company name exists), so they switch to "Leafro Organics". IP India shows no conflicting mark in Class 29. They register leafro.in and leafro.com, secure @leafro on Instagram, and file their trademark the same week.
1. How do I check if a domain name is available in India? Type the name into any accredited registrar's search box, or run a WHOIS lookup. It shows instantly whether .in, .com and other extensions are free.
2. Is domain name search free? Yes. Checking availability and running a WHOIS lookup are free. You pay only when you register the domain.
3. What is the price of a .in domain? Usually about ₹500–₹1,000 per year. The .IN Registry's wholesale rate is ₹500, and registrars add their margin or offer first-year discounts.
4. Should I choose .in or .com? Choose .in if most customers are in India, and .com if you sell globally. Ideally, register both and redirect one to the other.
5. Does a domain name give me rights to the brand name? No. A domain is only a web address. To protect the brand, register it as a trademark.
6. Can I register a domain if a company with that name already exists? Technically yes, if the domain is free, but it may lead to a trademark or passing-off dispute. Check MCA and trademark records first.
7. What is a WHOIS lookup? It's a search that shows a domain's registration date, expiry date and registrar, and sometimes owner details if privacy isn't enabled.
8. How long can I register a domain for? From 1 year up to 10 years at a time, renewable before expiry.
9. What happens if my domain expires? There's usually a short grace period to renew. After that it may be released and anyone can register it.
10. Can I transfer my domain to another registrar? Yes. Unlock the domain, get the transfer (EPP) code from your current registrar and start the transfer at the new one.
A domain name search takes seconds, but choosing a domain for your business deserves an hour. Check the domain, company name, trademark and social handles together, and pick a short name that's easy to spell. Secure the .in and .com versions early.
